An outstanding crisp Riesling from leading Uruguayan producer, Bouza. Full-on petrol and gym mat aromas and sparkling acidity. It could hold its own with the most serious German Rieslings and should age beautifully. Currently available in the UK from Jeroboams.
This wine is made from Vidiano which many think is Crete’s greatest white wine variety. It’s an easy-drinking, smooth-tasting wine with medium acidity and alcohol and yellow apple and peach and apricot fruit flavours. Douloufakis also make a barrel-aged, single vineyard example called Aspros Lagos. When young Vidiano is reminiscent of better-quality Pinot Grigio and it can also age well, developing complex honey and nutty flavours. Available in the UK from Maltby + Greek.
A good value, fresh, slightly floral, Assyrtiko from the largest wine cooperative on the island of Santorini. This is a light style intended for early drinking with lively acidity and citrus and stone fruit notes. If you prefer a more structured wine, try their Nykteri (staying up all night) which blends in two lesser known varieties – Athiri and Aidani – to add body and has six months in large oak to round it out. Available in the UK from Maltby + Greek.
From one of the Languedoc’s leading producers. Outstanding value from this unusual blend of Vermentino, Marsanne and Grenache Blanc. Well-balanced, citrus and stone fruit flavours. A full-bodied with light oaking. The very heavy bottle detracts though. From Waitrose.
Attems’ flagship Cicinis Sauvignon Blanc 2020 from Collio – an intense wine with restrained, tropical fruit notes. Aged for 8 months in a combination of oak barriques and concrete eggs giving a balance of freshness and structure. Burgundy meets Sauvignon Blanc! Available in London from Satyrio.
Named after the famous 1614 Etna eruption after which lava spewed out over the following ten years (!), this is a flinty, super dry, refreshing white from vines planted 800m up on volcanic soils in Sicily. It’s made from local grape Carricante plus some Riesling which adds zestiness to the green apple and lemon flavours. Perfect aperitif wine. Available from the Wine Society.
From W. Sicily, a great example of barrel aged Insolia best known in the past for making Marsala wine. Now as a single varietal, it offers great acidity, rich ripe yellow apple and stone fruit flavours and scents of vanilla. Will age well. Great with fish. Available from Tannico, UK.
A refreshing Vinho Verde made in the best region in the area. Bright lemon and honeysuckle notes with some nectarine and tropical fruits. Recently received a Gold award at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2022. Available from Portugalia.
